Usually it is just a basting stitch that is meant to be picked out before you wear it. Some materials don't hold pockets well, after alot of use, they get warped. This ensures that the pockets are nice, crisp and clean for the new owner, and not ruined by everyone who's tried it on before you.

The pocket is not meant to be used. Its meant for looks only.

It is for a pocket watch. You only unstitch if needed.

I AGREE! They do it for decoration or whatever but it really is pointless. I put my hands in my pockets alot and my work pants have what looks like pockets but they are sewn shut. In mine I riped the seam and now they are pockets but I can't put anything in them because they are too small. They need to either make them with pockets you can use or just don't do it at all!

My work uniform came like that, they're real pockets, but they were sewn shut…..so I asked. They said it's so the clothing keeps it's "form". I've never had a problem with clothing that wasn't sewed shut losing it's form, but whatever. It probably started with someone having a bad day at a factory….kinda like sewing the fly shut on underwear….what's up with that….why have it there if the guy can't use it?

True pockets are basted closed so the opening won't sag from
too many people trying the garment on & perhaps ramming their hands into the pockets. When you get the garment home simply, carefully remove the basting thread. Note: some pockets are fake & NOT meant to be used as such. Check the inside of the garment where the "pocket" is shown to be sure it is an actual pocket & not just a placket. the butler
